The Millhouse hosts smokefree night for local cancer man
March 31, 2005 - PRESS RELEASE -
The Scarman Trust charity is helping the people of Speke put on a special smokefree night at The Millhouse pub this Saturday, in honour of a popular local resident known as Terry 'the blue nose' Shire.
Terry, who is just 47, was recently diagnosed with cancer. In a bid to stop other people suffering in the same way, his friends and family came up with the idea of hosting a smokefree event which would promote the various health issues surrounding cancer in young men.
The Scarman Trust's Mike McEvatt - who is also one of Terry's close friends - said: "This night isn't about telling people what they should or shouldn't be doing in their spare time, but to help them make informed choices about their own health. And we also want them to have a good time while they're at it!"
The event starts at 7:30pm and will feature food, live music, dancers from Parklands High School and a karaoke. Trained smoking cessation specialists will be on hand to offer support and advice.
Andy Hull, Chair of SmokeFree Liverpool said: "1000 people die each year in Liverpool as a result of smoking-related illness, and up to 100 of these have never smoked themselves. This situation has to stop and we believe that restricting smoking in pubs will go some way towards that. We commend Terry's friends and family for being so brave and turning what is a tragic situation into a positive opportunity."
Admission to the event is free.
