SmokeFree Liverpool steps up lobbying campaign

January 14, 2005 - PRESS RELEASE

SmokeFree Liverpool is stepping up its lobbying campaign with the launch of a unique new website today.

The interactive site gives people the chance to send a message direct to their MP, calling on them to back the city's bid for a local Bill to restrict smoking in all enclosed workplaces.

It also features an online petition which supporters can sign up to, and an instant online poll which examines attitudes to smoking in the workplace.

Andy Hull, Chair of SmokeFree Liverpool, hopes that by making local MPs just one mouse click away, supporters will be encouraged to voice their opinions.

"We think we are the only city in the country making this kind of lobbying facility available to people. It is vital that the voice of the people is heard on this issue.

"We have already found tremendous support from all sectors - with our old website receiving hundreds of messages of support. Now, this new facility should encourage even more support, at a tremendously important time for the passage of the Bill." The Liverpool Bill is due to get its first reading later this month.

The new-look www.smokefreeliverpool.com website offers all the information anyone might need about Smokefree issues - whether individuals, local authorities, public sector organisations, charitable and voluntary organisations or private businesses.

It features facts about the smokefree movement, the reasons for going smokefree, the hurdles to cross and the people to contact to help take the first smokefree step. The site will also offer visitors the opportunity to read the latest news and access a wide range of resources.

Andy Hull added: "We felt we needed a more comprehensive resource for people to turn to for information and advice, which is what this great new site provides."

The Liverpool Bill will get its first reading in the House of Lords on January 24. Meanwhile, City Councillors will vote for a second time on Wednesday 26 January on the Liverpool Bill, as part of the parliamentary process.
