300 people to stub out cigarettes in the Metal Box

February 24, 2005 - PRESS RELEASE

The biggest smokefree event so far in Liverpool takes place tomorrow.

Speke Argyle football team and The Fox golf society will be co-hosting a smokefree event for 300 guests at the Metal Box Sports & Social Club in Speke on Friday night.

The event will be a fundraiser for Speke Argyle, as well as the local under 16's and under 14's Saturday and Sunday teams. Money raised will go toward new kits and equipment including balls and nets.

Entertainment will be in the form of games, live music, karaoke, a buffet and a disco. Trained smoking cessation specialists will also be on hand to offer support and advice.

Organiser Robert Kayes said: "I recently attended a smokefree night at The Noah's Ark and saw what a success it was - which gave me the idea for this event. SmokeFree Liverpool is something we all support and we're happy to able to promote positive free time activity that does not involve smoking.

"We'd also like to thank The Metal Box for backing us - they have pledged to ban smoking throughout the club on the night, not just in our function room."

Andy Hull, Chair of SmokeFree Liverpool, said: "This is one of the biggest smokefree events that we will have seen in Liverpool so far. We are pleased that the success of other smokefree events is encouraging other people and we hope the momentum continues!"

The event starts at 8pm at Metal Box Sports & Social Club, Speke Boulevard, L24 9PN.
