D-MYST take smoking campaign to an international audience
May 3, 2006
Lucky Faye Tomlinson will be off to Dublin this summer to see Robbie Williams - thanks to a smokefree youth group.
Faye from Liverpool beat off stiff competition to win an all expenses paid trip to see Robbie play live in 'smokefree Dublin', by entering a competition run by D-MYST (Direct Movement by the Youth SmokeFree Team).
The competition attracted almost 200 entries from across the city vying for the chance to see the former Take That star play in Croke Park on June 9th.
Run in conjunction with Juice FM the competition was organised as a way to highlight the opinions and to gauge the support of young Liverpudlians over the smokefree issue.
Entrants were asked to fill in a questionnaire about their views and concerns on how smoking is portrayed in the media and the responsibilities of the media to promote a smokefree culture particularly among young people.
A draw was then made and the entrants were shortlisted down to five, which were contacted on-air by Juice FM, with Faye emerging as the winner.
She said: "I couldn't be happier - I have been a fan of Robbie Williams for many years and I have never been to Dublin.
"I am also really looking forward to going out in Dublin and enjoying its smokefree atmosphere. I am what you would call a social smoker, but fully support the smoking restrictions which have been proposed by the Government - helping me to finally stop smoking and to protect my health and the health of those around me."
The D-MYST group, run by young people from Liverpool, plan to help young people make informed choices by exposing the truth about smoking and the deceptive practices of the tobacco industry.
Gina McDaid, Project Co-ordinator with D-MYST, said: "We are extremely happy to be able to present Faye with this prize. The response that we received through this competition has been phenomenal and we believe that it has been very successful in raising the awareness of the smokefree issue amongst young adults in this city."
